Escapril Day 14: Wishbone

TW: Death

NOTE: Prompts by @letsescapril on Instagram

When my brother and I were young
I'd barely just turned six
We would play outside and find
Pinecones and find sticks
One day when we were running
I fell and skinned my knee
My brother carried me home
A mile to safety

When my brother and I were teens
We played football everyday
He was the team captain
And I was a scrawny, messed-up stray
But even still my brother
Held me way up high
He made sure I was welcomed
And never asked me why

When my brother and I were older
It was one Thanksgiving morn
I was helping cooking
My bro was grilling corn
And when the time for dinner came
I held the wishbone to the sky
I wished that he would be okay
That he would never die

But then I grew old
My brother did as well
My wishbone went awry
The tumor started to swell
I love my brother more than life
After all he did for me
And now with this new wishbone
I hope that he is free
