Your character thinks her boss is looking for an excuse to fire her. She decides to fight back.... https://www.creative-writing-now.com/short-story-ideas.html Lexi glared as her boss, Maria, made her rounds. She stopped at Lexi’s desk, frowning at the mess that had gathered on it. “What are you working on today, Lexi?” “Well, last week you-” “Stop, stop, stop,” Maria said, holding up a hand. “Last week? Shouldn’t you be done by now?” “Well, it’s a fairly big project and you only assigned it on Friday,” Lexi said. “Are you talking back to me?” “What?! No, I uh-” “Get it done today, Fisher,” Maria said with a glare before walking off. Lexi turned to her coworker, Ken, and hissed, “Do you see what I mean?! She’s totally looking for a way to fire me!” “I don’t think-” “Did you see how harsh she was on me?” “Well, yes, but-” “Well, I’ve had enough of her bullying. I’m not going to take her bullshit anymore. From now on, I fight back.” “Fisher, could you see me in my office for a moment?” Maria asked sometime the next week.
“Of course, Miss Stewart,” Lexi said, putting on a false innocent tone. She grinned at Ken triumphantly and he sighed. “Please, sit,” Maria said. Lexi did as she asked, while Maria pulled up something on her computer. She turned the monitor to face Lexi. “Is this the project that I assigned you to work on?” “Yes,” Lexi said. “Is there a problem with it?” “Well, yes, there are many problems with it,” Maria said. “For one, all of the numbers on this page add up to a negative total, which isn’t possible.” “Huh,” Lexi said, looking at the monitor. “I’m so sorry, I must’ve put the wrong numbers in.” “Yes, you must’ve,” Maria glared. “And you know that we don’t use Comic Sans at this company. Honestly, has the basic training just left your head?” “I-” “I expect this project-completed correctly-on my desk tomorrow. If it isn’t, there will be some consequences.” “Yes, yes, of course. I’ll get it done, Miss Stewart,” Lexi promised. The next day, after Lexi hadn’t attempted to turn in the project, Maria called her into her office at the end of the day. “Miss Fisher, I was wondering where that project was.” “Oh, that,” Lexi said. “I must’ve forgotten.” “Fisher!” Maria said. “You had one job today. I’m sorry to say that if this continues I’ll have to let you go.” “Ah ha! I knew it!” Lexi said. “I knew you were looking for a reason to fire me!” “A reason to fire you?!” Maria asked. “Those are very serious accusations, Miss Fisher.” “Oh please,” Lexi said. “You’re so hard on me! You’re always over-correct my work, you’re always making sarcastic comments, and just being a jerk!” “Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry,” Maria said, putting her hands in her hands. “And-wait, what?” Lexi asked. When Maria’s face emerged from her hands, her hand was read. “I’m so sorry,” she said. “I-uh-I get like that when I...like someone.” “When you...what?!” “Ugh, I didn’t want you to have to find out this way. I know, I know, it’s totally unprofessional and nothing will happen-” “Pick me up at 7,” Lexi said. “I-what?” “Pick me up at 7 tomorrow night. My favorite sushi bar is across the street from here,” Lexi said. “May I go now…?” “Yeah, yeah of course,” Maria said. “I’ll, uh, be there.” “Good,” Lexi grinned. “Wear something nice.”
