You're on a blind date — with your sworn enemy. https://blog.reedsy.com/creative-writing-prompts/comedy/you-re-on-a-blind-date-with-your-sworn-enemy "I'm serious, Kyle, this guy will be perfect for you," Abby said over the phone. "Just try to look nice. If you show up with-" "Injuries and messed up hair it won't be good, yes, I know," I said, rolling my eyes. "Don't worry, it'll be fine." "Good," Abby said. My phone started beeping urgently. "I've got to go, Abby, I'll call you back." "What? No, don't-" "Captain Steel, we have an urgent message for you." "What is it?" I asked, standing up and walking over to my closet. "Mind Over Matter is trying to break into the bank." "Again?" I asked, pulling the silver suit off of its hanger. "I just got him arrested last week!" "Yeah, he's a slippery one. How quickly can you be here?" I looked at my watch. I had to be at the restaurant for my date in an hour! But the people came first. I just hoped my date wasn't too mad... "Give me five minutes." Soon, I was running down the streets, gun in hand. People pointed and gawked as I ran. "Look, it's Captain Steel!" "Where's he going?" "Hi Captain Steel!" I panted as I ran. I was running out of breath quickly. I envied Superman. Why couldn't I have been given the ability to fly? No, I just had stupid strength and steel skin. I wheezed, but I was almost at the bank now. Mind Over Matter stood on the steps, causing a pillar to float high above his head. His face was contorted in concentration. I felt my muscles tighten as my skin grew tougher. I ran towards him, sending a powerful punch towards his nose. Before I could blink, he was gone. Well, not gone, but standing 50 yards away. Stupid teleportation! I'd almost forgotten about that. "Well, well, well. Who do we have here? Captain Steel what a great surprise!" Mind Over Matter said. I could see-with a bit of satisfaction-that his nose was crooked, broken by my fist. He seemed unfazed by it, but I smirked a tad. "I think your nose is running," I said. Mind Over Matter rolled his eyes. "You think you are so clever, don't you?" "I have my moments." "Ugh you athletic people are insufferable," he said, sending the pillar of marble towards my head. My hands flew up to catch it, but a huge cut formed on my arm as a shard of stone scraped the edge of my steel skin. "Asshole." "Right back at you," he said. He started to say something else, but was drowned out by police sirens in the background. "Well, this really has been fun, but I must go." With that, Mind Over Matter disappeared. I sighed. It was no use running after him now. I checked my watch. It was 6:30-I only had half an hour until I had to be at the restaurant! I cursed loudly and started sprinting back to my apartment. "Abby! There you are!" I said, giving the much shorter girl a hug. She shoved me back. "What?"
"You're late!" she said. "And you have messed up hair. And look at that arm!" I sighed. "Yes, yes I know. I'm sorry-something came up. At least I have a tux on this time!" Abby scowled, then sighed heavily. "At least you're not as bad as Ryan. He's...somewhere. Good luck." "Wait! Where are you going? Ah, come on Abby!" I yelled after her. Muttering under my breath, I said, "Ugh I hate being a superhero." "What was that?" "Oh, nothing," I said, turning around. There was a disheveled-albeit handsome man standing there in a tuxedo. His nose was crooked and I could see spots on his chin where dried blood had been hurriedly scratched off. "Oh, okay," he said. "So how do you know Abby?" "We work together. You?" "We went to high school together. We actually dated at one point until I realized I was gay," he chucked. "Been there," I laughed. "You must be Ryan?" "That's me. I guess that makes you Kyle?" "Yep," I said. "Huh, you look so familiar. Have we met before?" "I doubt it, but I'm getting that vibe too." "Must be a crazy coincidence." "Must be." I frowned. "What happened to your nose?" "Oh, uh, a cab door hit me on the way over here," he said. I raised an eyebrow and was about to ask if he was okay, but before I could a woman called, "Ryan for two!" "That's us," Ryan said. "Come on." I followed him to the table, sitting opposite of him. It was a pretty fancy restaurant-nice decor, a fountain bubbling quietly in the background-and I felt bad for looking all messed up. I tried to hurriedly pat down my hair as we sat down. "So what do you do?" I asked him. "I'm an accountant," he said. I could hide my wince. "What?" "Isn't that boring?" "Not really," Ryan shrugged. "What about you?" "I'm a personal trainer. Abby's my boss." It was Ryan's turn to wince. "I hate gyms," he said. "I don't see the point." "Well maybe you could stop by sometime and I bet I could get you to like them," I said. Then I winced. "Oh gosh that wasn't meant to be sexual." Ryan laughed as a waiter walked over. "Hello, gentlemen, I'll be your waiter for tonight. My name is Phoebe, can I get any drinks started for you?" "I'll have a margarita on the rocks," Ryan said. "Just a water for me," I said. "So how long have you lived in the city?" "Pretty much my whole life." "Same here." "Have you ever been to Jay Park?" Ryan asked. I nodded. "It's so beautiful there. Maybe we could go take a walk there next time." "Next time?" "Well I think this is going pretty well, don't you?" Ryan asked. I nodded. "Then why shouldn't there be a next time?" "I don't know. I'm not used to first dates going well." The waiter came back by our table. "Margarita on the rocks and a water," she said, handing us our drinks. "Are you ready to order yet?" "Yes, could I have the filet mignon?" "Of course," Phoebe said. "And for you sir?" "The penne pasta, please." "Certainly," she said. She collected our menus and walked away. I was about to ask him another question when a family passed by the table. I overheard the girl excitedly say, "and Captain Steel just pummeled him-" I smirked a bit as I heard it, but I saw Ryan roll his eyes. "I hate that guy, don't you?" I spat out my water. "Oh my gosh! Are you okay?!" "I'm fine," I coughed. "I was just....surprised. Why do you hate C-Captain Steel?" "Ugh, he's just so cocky and he thinks he's so clever." "Huh," I said. "I see him as more heroic, you know?" "No," Ryan said. "You know, you really do look familiar. Must just be my eyes." "Yeah," I coughed. I had to get out of here. He was starting to recognize me. "I've-" "And he's just so stupid, all brawny. Mind over matter, that's what I say." Something clicked-the nose, the hatred, and now...I felt like I was going to be sick. "What is it? Are you okay?" "I'm fine," I tried to say convincingly. I was on a date with my nemesis-Mind Over Matter. But I couldn't let him leave now, not when he was so close. I had to find a way to get him alone so I could knock him out... I'm going to skip over the details of what happened-let's just say it didn't go too well. Lots of drinking, terrible flirting, and...uh...kissing. Yeah, that's innocent enough, right? Yeah, kissing. And some past that-I was really drunk, okay? And I definitely did NOT accomplish what I needed to. Well, he was knocked out but that wasn't the point. The point was, I had gone on a date with my nemesis and it had actually ended better than my other dates! "And that's how Daddy and I started dating," I said. I chuckled as I thought back on that day. I never would've known that this is where it'd lead. "I can't believe you guys were really enemies." Cara said. "It just seems too weird. "Yep." "Are you really telling this story again?" Ryan asked, walking into the room. "What? It's a good story." "I'm glad I didn't know it was you. I would've punched you to death." "Daddy likes to overestimate his strength, Cara," I said. "Oh yeah?" Ryan joked. "Come at me. Come on." I walked over and kissed him on the lips. "I never could've guessed that I'd end up here," I said. "But I'm so glad I did." "Me too," Ryan said. We both smiled as we thought of fond past memories as we made out way into the kitchen.
