Using only dialogue, write a short story about a first date, a reunion between old friends, an argument that gets heated, an adult explaining something to a child, or the reveal of a long-hidden secret. https://blog.reedsy.com/creative-writing-prompts/general/using-only-di-810e173a-699e-40f1-95c6-4960eb7c2674 I wanted to improve on my dialogue a bit so I found this prompt (I didn’t want to use any dialogue tags or anything, just plain dialogue)

“Excuse me?”
“Oh please, Hannah, you’ve done this before. Don’t expect me to think it wasn’t you.”
“It wasn’t! I’d never betray you like that.”
“5th grade-”
“I was younger then.”
“But no less stupid. You know how much I like Justin! Why couldn’t you just stay quiet?”

“I didn’t tell him!”
“Don’t lie to me!”
“I’m not lying!!”

“Liar.”
“Marie, I’d never betray you like that. It’s really unfair that you think I’d do that to you.”
“How could I not?”
“You could trust that your best friend has your back and would never do anything to hurt you!”

“Oh please. Don’t start with that again.”
“What do you mean?”
“Every time that you mess up it’s the same excuse. ‘I’m your best friend!’ ‘I didn’t mean to hurt you!’ It’s bullshit. If you were actually my best friend you wouldn’t mess up at all.”
“Oh so I have to be perfect to be your friend, then?”
“I’m not saying that. I just wish....”

“That you had better friends?”
“That you’d think about what you’re doing before you do it.”
“That’s why I didn’t tell Justin.”
“Then who did? I told three people about this-you, my mom, and my brother. Who would’ve told him?”
“I don’t know. I don’t know how it got out. I don’t know how he knows. I did not tell him.”’
“Then who did you tell? You had to have told someone!”
“I…”

“What?”
“I…”
“What?!”
“I told Brian...but we were alone! No one heard us!”

“You told...Justin’s best friend...that I like Justin...BECAUSE YOU WANTED STUPID BRIAN GOODWIN TO NOTICE YOU?!”
“It wasn’t like that…”
“Sure it was!”
“I told him not to tell Justin!”
“And I told you not to tell anyone. If you don’t want to respect me, then I don’t think we can be friends anymore.”

“So that’s how you’re ending ten years of friendship? In a stupid kindergarten fight because your crush-who likes you back-now knows that you like him?”
“That’s not why I’m ending it! I’m ending it because for ten years I’ve had my advice ignored by the one person that I trust most in the world and..that just can’t continue. So, goodbye, Hannah. Have a nice life.”
